En Estados Unidos y Canadá, muchos mercados organizados ya están observando altos niveles de VRE. En la madrugada del 27 de abril de 2020, la SPP alcanzó más del 73 % de
su potencia instantánea proporcionada por la VRE. Muchas
regiones también tienen el desafío de los diseños de mercado
que deben armonizar con las decisiones políticas tomadas
fuera del mercado. Así pues, los operadores del mercado en
todo el continente han venido facilitando cambios de diseño
para permitir la participación de nuevas tecnologías, garantizar la confiabilidad frente a los nuevos desafíos y proporcionar señales que conduzcan al funcionamiento y la inversión óptimos de la flota de suministro.

carbono en Ontario
En el lapso de 10 años, Ontario transformó su combinación
de suministros para producir el 95 % de su energía libre
de carbono mediante la eliminación gradual de las fuentes
de carbón desde 2005 hasta 2014. La capacidad existente
de potencia nuclear e hidropotencia se mantuvo en gran
medida, mientras que el carbón fue sustituido por el gas
natural, el viento y la energía solar. El mercado de electricidad funcionó fundamentalmente de la misma manera a lo
largo de esta transformación, utilizando el despacho económico basado en la oferta. Se requería que la VRE conectada
a la transmisión fuera despachable y que se pudiera ofertar
en el mercado. A medida que se conectaba más capacidad de
VRE al sistema, los precios de la electricidad tendían a bajar,
demostrando el efecto de orden de mérito, tal como se indicó
anteriormente (véase la figura 3). Los precios recientes han
sido, en promedio, un tercio de los niveles eliminados del
mercado antes del comienzo de la eliminación gradual del
carbón.
Esta transición no ha generado resultados de precios de
mercado binarios de cero dólares cuando la VRE es marginal o un gran pico cuando las fuentes de gas natural lo son.
Ontario tiene una combinación única de fuentes de cero carbono en su flota hidroeléctrica que, si bien no tiene costos de
combustible, tiene otros costos variables impuestos debido
