en distintos momentos del día, mientras
que la curva que aparece en la figura
4 muestra el consumo industrial.
Aunque estos datos son de la década de
1940, sirven para mostrar la relación
típica entre el consumo de iluminación
e industrial. El consumo industrial alcanza
su punto máximo entre las 8 a.m.
y las 6 p.m. y disminuye después de las
10 p.m. Completa los valles de la curva
de iluminación. Cuando se agrega la
carga industrial a un sistema de iluminación,
el consumo energético global
se incrementa y da lugar a un mayor retorno
de la inversión. La necesidad de
mejorar el factor de carga fue un estímulo
importante en el desarrollo de los
motores eléctricos industriales.
El sistema de iluminación de Edison
utilizaba la corriente continua (CC), el
sistema eléctrico dominante en la década
de 1880. Por consiguiente, había
un enorme mercado para los motores
de CC. El diseño más común era el motor
de derivación, un motor que tenía
su campo y su armadura en paralelo.
Los motores de derivación tienen la característica
deseable de una velocidad
casi constante a medida que aumenta la
carga accionada. Esto permitía que la
tasa de producción en cada estación de
trabajo se mantuviera constante.
El motor de CC tiene dos problemas
graves. El primero es el conmutador.
El conmutador es un pequeño anillo
de segmentos conductores unidos al eje
del rotor. Se utiliza para mantener el
campo magnético del rotor en relación
correcta con el campo magnético del
estator. Era, como decía Nikola Tesla,
un medio para desplazar los polos.
La interacción adecuada de estos dos
campos es vital para la producción de
par de torsión. Como el conmutador
cambia la corriente de la armadura, es
inevitable que se produzcan chispas.
Estas chispas erosionan los segmentos
del conmutador y requieren un mantenimiento
frecuente. El segundo problema
es inherente a los sistemas de CC.
No hay medios sencillos para elevar la
tensión de distribución. A medida que
aumentaban las distancias de transmisión,
esta limitación de la tensión significaba
que el sistema de CA de Westinghouse,
que al principio utilizaba el
transformador Gaulard y Gibbs para
aumentar la tensión de transmisión, sería
el sistema del futuro.
Existía un problema
importante.

Ningún motor de CA tenía las características
del motor de derivación de CC.
Quien lograra resolver este problema,
tendría un mercado amplio y rentable.
Durante la última mitad de la década
de 1880 se produjo un aumento de las
invenciones de motores de CA.

de CA
La solución más sencilla era utilizar
un motor de CC en CA. Pero los motores
de CC no funcionarían, ni tampoco
los motores de derivación. Los
motores eléctricos producen un par de
torsión o esfuerzo de giro utilizando la
interacción de dos campos magnéticos:
uno del " campo " y otro de la armadura.
Aunque el campo magnético que
genera el campo de derivación sería
constante, el campo de la armadura se
alternaría, primero a la derecha y luego
a la izquierda, dos veces en un ciclo de
CA. Sin embargo, con el motor en serie,
ambos campos se alternarían a la
