intuitiva. No obstante, los datos que surgen de los informes
sobre grandes y destructivos incendios forestales durante las
últimas décadas muestran una fuerte y clara evidencia de la
mayor gravedad y tamaño de los incendios forestales.
Cambio climático e incendios forestales
Los fenómenos meteorológicos extremos en todo el mundo
están confirmando lo que ha sido el consenso entre los científicos
del clima: el clima está cambiando. La influencia
humana en este cambio es sustancial y no se puede negar.
Las grandes cantidades de emisiones de gases de efecto
invernadero y la sobreexplotación de los ecosistemas esenciales
han superado la resiliencia natural del planeta y están
provocando cambios en el clima. El último informe del
Grupo Intergubernamental de Expertos sobre el Cambio
Climático (agosto de 2021) afirma que " es inequívoco que la
influencia humana ha calentado la atmósfera, el océano y la
tierra. Se han producido cambios rápidos y generalizados en
la atmósfera, el océano, la criosfera y la biosfera. "
Especialmente en el hemisferio norte, el cambio climático
se manifiesta a través de temperaturas consistentemente
más altas (durante el siglo pasado, las temperaturas promedio
globales han aumentado alrededor de 1 °C) y periodos
prolongados de sequía. En general, los fenómenos meteorológicos
se vuelven más extremos. Si bien las precipitaciones
generales no necesariamente han disminuido, ocurren en
eventos más cortos e intensos. Un ejemplo son las extensas
inundaciones que devastaron grandes áreas de Europa Central
y el Sudeste Asiático a principios del verano de 2021. La
ola de calor anterior, que produjo temperaturas sin precedentes
en varios lugares de Europa (p. ej., 35 °C en Irlanda),
completa el panorama.
El cambio climático es el resultado de un ciclo de retroalimentación
positiva. Un ejemplo es el derretimiento de los
casquetes de hielo en las regiones polares, inducido por la
temperatura. La región del permafrost del norte de Siberia
contiene importantes extensiones de turberas, que al deshelarse
proporcionan combustible para los incendios de brasas
que emiten más dióxido de carbono. Si bien los incendios
forestales son, en teoría, neutros en carbono (el dióxido
de carbono liberado durante el incendio se reabsorberá a
medida que la vegetación vuelva a crecer), los incendios de
turba son un contribuyente neto a las emisiones de carbono.
Se estima que las emisiones de dióxido de carbono de los
incendios de turberas de 1997 en Indonesia correspondieron
en hasta el 40 % de las emisiones de combustibles fósiles
durante el mismo año. Por tanto, el cambio climático impulsado
por el dióxido de carbono se autoacelera y contribuye
indirectamente a un aumento de las emisiones de dióxido de
carbono, lo que a su vez acelera aún más el cambio climático.
Una consecuencia de las temperaturas medias más elevadas
derivadas del cambio climático es la disminución de
la humedad ambiental, lo que provoca una disminución de
los niveles de humedad de la vegetación. A su vez, esto hace

Paradoja de los incendios
Una de las muchas explicaciones para el aumento en el
área quemada incluso con una frecuencia de incendios
más baja es " la paradoja de los incendios " . Para prevenir
los incendios forestales catastróficos en el pasado, se hizo
un esfuerzo (particularmente en los Estados Unidos) para
suprimir agresivamente todos los incendios. Sin quema
periódica, el material vegetal muerto (combustible sólido)
se acumuló a lo largo de los años. El aumento de la carga
de combustible causó que los incendios forestales fueran
más propensos a crecer fuera de control y afectar más severamente
el ecosistema. A partir de eso surgió un cambio
en los esfuerzos del control de incendios. Ahora, permitir
que los incendios de baja intensidad ardan y usar la quema
controlada se han convertido en importantes estrategias
de manejo de los incendios forestales.
