Un módulo de una central de SMR
Aquí se muestra un reactor modular pequeño de gas de alta
temperatura conceptualizado (figura S1). El diseño de dos
recipientes une el núcleo del reactor con el generador de
vapor a través de un par de tubos anidados que transportan
el refrigerante de helio. El combustible de uranio se encuentra
en forma de partículas encapsuladas de carbono/carburo
de silicio empaquetadas en forma de " guijarros " esféricos o
conjuntos prismáticos sobre los que fluye el refrigerante. Las
barras de control que absorben los neutrones son utilizadas
para regular la reactividad en el núcleo y ajustar la potencia

recipiente del reactor utilizando un circulador de helio, desciende
a través del núcleo y extrae el calor, luego fluye hacia
el generador de vapor donde transfiere ese calor a un bucle
secundario. Luego, el vapor impulsa una turbina, la cual está
conectada a un generador síncrono para producir electricidad.
El vapor de la salida de la turbina se vuelve a condensar
en agua mediante un bucle de refrigeración externo y se
bombea de vuelta a la entrada del generador de vapor. Se
utilizan un bucle adicional y un intercambiador de calor para
extraer calor para procesos industriales o para aplicaciones
de calefacción urbana.
