despliegue de energía eólica y solar durante las últimas dos
décadas solo han aumentado la proporción de energía limpia
de la electricidad del 28 al 38 % (la línea azul continua en la
figura 1). Este ritmo de implementación (línea azul discontinua)
será insuficiente para lograr un 100 % de electricidad
limpia para 2035 (línea verde discontinua).
La escala del despliegue de nuevas fuentes de energía
limpia será incluso mayor de lo indicado si se produce una
electrificación significativa. La mayoría de los estudios de
vías de descarbonización exigen la electrificación significativa
del transporte, los edificios y la industria a fin de
reemplazar los usos actuales de energía fósil con energía de
bajo costo y cero emisiones de carbono. Incluso si esos usos
finales se hacen mucho más eficientes energéticamente, la
electrificación aumentará materialmente la demanda eléctrica
total (definida aquí como demanda conectada a la
red, incluida la que se satisface con la generación particular
distribuida). El Estudio de Futuros de Electrificación de
NREL predice que la demanda casi se duplicará para 2050,
dependiendo del ritmo de la electrificación. ZeroByFifty

muchos estudios proyectan un desarrollo expandido importante.
Es posible que se necesite al menos 1 TW de nueva
capacidad eólica y FV para alcanzar el 100 % de electricidad
limpia, y el doble de esa capacidad para el 100 % de energía
limpia. Por ejemplo, ZeroByFifty encuentra 1 TW de energía
FV nueva y 1 TW de eólica nueva para 2050 necesarios
para alcanzar el 100 % de energía limpia [figura 2(a)]. RIIA
encuentra que se requiere 1 TW de energía eólica/FV nueva
para cumplir con el 100 % de electricidad limpia dentro de
EI.
Se necesitará una transmisión significativa para entregar
estas fuentes a las cargas. ZeroByFifty descubrió que
la expansión de la transmisión es necesaria para la descarbonización
en todos los escenarios futuros. La cantidad de
transmisión nueva varía según el escenario y los niveles de
demanda futuros. ZeroByFifty y el estudio del MIT revelan
