Cybersecurity is a real and continuously changing
threat to electric utilities. An axiom long understood
for critical systems is that cybersecurity must be
designed in, it cannot be added after systems are developed.
Protecting the grid is now recognized as a parallel
effort to protecting Industrial Control Systems. This
course describes both the fundamentals and advanced
techniques to implement cybersecure systems at electric
utilities. Topics covered include security basics such as
risks, vulnerabilities, and threats to advanced topics
such as risk mitigation strategies and cybersecure grid
modernization architectures.

This course introduces the basic concepts, fundamental
theories and practical technologies on Distribution Automation
and Management Systems (DA/DMS). It addresses
the key aspects of DA/DMS systems, including distribution
grid modeling, feeder automation, operation analysis
and management based on some practical use cases of the
Distribution Automation Systems with advanced applications
in Smart Distribution, as well as the integration with
Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), Inverter Based
Resources (IBRs), and Microgrids. The course will cover the
following break-down topics: the roles of Smart Distribution

This multi-presenter tutorial covers the basics of electrical
energy storage (primarily for the grid), including the
factors driving the need for electrical energy storage;
the various energy storage applications; various present
and potential future battery energy storage technologies
(BESS), e.g., Li-based, advanced lead-acid, flow batteries,
sodium-based batteries, metal-air batteries, and zincbased
rechargeable batteries; commissioning of energy
storage systems; engineering of energy storage systems,
interconnection with the grid (e.g., IEEE 1547); energy
management systems, commissioning, system safety and
reliability, and finally, code compliance.
