Professional Gains and Opportunities with Volunteering

The present panel aims to expound on the professional and
leadership gains with PES volunteering activity. The session
will follow a round table structure with world-named
PES leaders, who will be sharing the gains that students
and young professionals can have by getting engaged with
PES volunteering. The panelists will share their trajectories
and points of view about how the volunteering engagement
helped them achieve their current career success. The
panel is mostly dedicated to students who aim to lighten
their careers by engaging with the IEEE and PES. By this
session, the attendees will learn how to derive benefits from
IEEE and PES memberships to step up their opportunities
in professional life and achieve career success. There will be
space for questions and interaction with the panelists.

Free flow of electricity from a higher potential to a lower
potential through the lines leads to an inefficient operation
of the grid due to low power factor (large amount of undesired
reactive power flow compared to active power flow)
and non-optimized loading (some lines may be overloaded
while others are underloaded). Traditional Power Flow
Controllers regulate one of the parameters - voltage, phase
angle or line reactance and, therefore, cannot regulate
active and reactive power flows independently, which is
not desirable. A SMART Power Flow Controller (SPFC)
regulates two parameters - resistance and reactance, which
is needed for an efficient operation of the grid with a highpower
factor (low amount of undesired reactive power flow
compared to active power flow) and an optimized loading
(each line may be loaded with the desired active and reactive
power flows) at an affordable price. An SPFC will be
discussed for various utility applications.
