Design and Deployment for a More Sustainable and Distributed Grid

Distributed Energy Resource (DER) growth brings challenges
to grid operation, including managing capacity
constraints and equipment overload, managing reverse
power flow, managing voltage/frequency issues, and managing
DER's uncertainties while enabling the participation
of distributed resources in the energy and capacity markets.
Among the new technologies, the DER management
system (DERMS) can play an essential role in resolving the
challenges as a non-wire alternative solution, with which
grid operators can reliably and safely handle the increasing
DER penetration in the distribution system. DERMS
enables many benefits, including enhanced reliability,
better operational efficiency, and higher system utilization,
thereby lowering costs for customers. It supports integrating
renewable generation and distributed demand-side
resources into the grid and maintains power-flow and
voltage within prescribed limits for distribution circuits.
This panel will bring practitioners, vendors, and researchers
together to discuss the advancements of DERMS for the
next-generation ADMS, including its structure, algorithms,
and prior experiences.

Enhancing Grid Resilience with HVDC and FACTS

This panel will review positive impacts of HVDC and
FACTS have on system resilience. Potential vulnerabilities
that HVDC and FACTS systems inherit from the bulk
power system through the interconnected nature ac systems
as well as through SCADA and other communication systems
will be reviewed with an emphasis on how communications
for FACTS systems and HVDC protection and control

differ from those for conventional ac systems. HVDC
and FACTS systems also have the ability to improve the
resilience of the bulk power system. FACTS devices, LCC
HVDC systems, VSC-based HVDC systems, and multiterminal
DC grids will be compared in terms of their abilities
to impact system resilience in the face of major disturbances
or cyber-physical events. Potential detection and mitigation
ideas will be presented. Example case studies based on existing
or proposed systems will be presented.

Grid-Interactive Efficient Buildings to Enhance Power Grid
Flexibility and Resilience

Energy efficiency and demand flexibility are two major
thrusts that drive the grid-interactive efficient building
(GEB) technology. The deployment of two-way communications
and advanced sensors and control systems enable
GEBs to provide significant demand flexibility and various
grid services. First, driven by the U.S.'s carbon-neutral
target in 2050, more distributed energy resources (DERs),
such as renewable energy sources (RESs), energy storage
(ES), and electric vehicles (EVs), will be deployed in communities.
Coordination among RESs, EVs, and GEBs can
provide significant potential benefits for building, community,
and grid. Second, FERC Order No. 2222 now allows
DERs whose capacity is greater than 100 kW to directly
participate in whole markets and provide grid services. Due
to climate change, extreme weather events may severely
degrade the generation level at bulk power systems, resulting
in large-scale power outages and customer interruption.
GEB technology can provide local building-level and gridlevel
resilience during these events. This panel session will
discuss new opportunities for GEBs, as a connected group
with other RESs, ES, and EVs, to increase grid flexibility
and resilience.
