Grid Computing and Analytics - From Historical Solutions
to Quantum Computing

The electric power grid is undergoing an unprecedented
transformation due to the changing electric generation
and load landscape, moving from large-scale solutions to
customer-based decentralized and distributed ones. Grid
operators collect and analyze a considerable amount of
data to operate the grid, and as a result, becoming more
reliant on their computing capabilities. An ongoing challenge
is that using existing solutions on more powerful
computers is not a practical approach to address emerging
complexities. Electric utilities will need to move
beyond classical computing solutions for system operation
and control under normal and contingency conditions.
This panel brings together subject matter experts
to discuss the history and role of computing in electric
power systems and how it has changed over the years.
The panel will further discuss how quantum computing
is becoming a necessity in addressing many challenges of
the grid of the future.

Building a Resilient Distribution Grid: Real-time Situational
Awareness and Enhanced Control

As the electric grid undergoes a major change, distribution
system reliability and resilience are starting to
play a key role. With the proliferation of distributed
energy resources and possible bi-directional energy
flow throughout the distribution grid, real-time
measurements, protection systems, and control of
the distribution system have to evolve to match the
needed performance. Real-time situational awareness,

monitoring, and control are key aspects in enabling
a resilient and efficient operation of the distribution
grid. In the past several years, a number of technologies,
such as microgrids have been shown to be effective
in achieving a more resilient distribution
grid operation.
The proposed panel will discuss the current state of the
art in real-time distribution grid monitoring, analysis
and control, tools and techniques used for real-time
situational awareness, recent innovations, as well
as gaps and challenges that we need to overcome to
maintain and enhance reliability and resilience of the
distribution grid.

Design, Visualizations, and the Control Room of the Future

As utilities strive to eliminate the impacts of events that
interrupt power supply and the integration of renewables
and distributed generation, while also trying to strengthen
situational awareness and safety, what's the optimal design
and structure for the control center, and what tools and
solutions are recommended?
This panel will discuss factors such as ergonomics, video
wall technologies, human factors & human performance,
visualizations, virtual reality and other technologies that
come into play to build the control room of the future.
Covering practical examples used in electric, gas and water
operations, we'll discuss the growing challenges and complexities
in control rooms and contributing factors to those
challenges, providing examples of techniques that have successfully
addressed them.
