Integration of Robust Optimization with Evolutionary Optimization
in Smart Grid

In this panel, Robust Optimization (RO) which means
optimization methods under uncertainty is overviewed
and discussed to find new directions with Evolutionary
Computation of Computational Intelligence (CI)
in Smart Grid. Recently, the emergence of renewable
energy, demand response and EVs has brought about
uncertainties to smart grid. As a result, deterministic
optimization methods have the limitations to handle
the uncertainties. Simple stochastic programming is
popular as an optimization method with uncertain
variables, but it is time-consuming because of setting
up the additional conditions to the formulations. To
overcome that, alternative methods are required to deal
with the optimization problems. As a candidate, RO is
expected to aim at evaluating the optimal solution in
the worst case from a standpoint of risk minimization.
Most of the RO formulations are based on the linear
programming (LP) with continuous variables so that
there is a limit to what LP can solve in nonlinear Smart
Grid. This panel covers new methods that introduce
Evolutionary Computation of the nonlinear optimization
into the RO problems to overcome a drawback of
the conventional methods. So, it is expected that the
use of Evolutionary Computation allows Smart Grid
decision makers to provide risk free solutions to the
worst case in smart grid efficiently.

The electric utility industry is changing rapidly as it faces
emerging technologies with changing business models

and increasing customer expectations that energy be
sustainable in its production, transmission, and distribution.
The IEEE PES T&D EXPO will showcase all of
these technologies. But, what about the next generation
of men and women that need to deploy and use the
technology, respond to new business models, and meet
customer demands?
This panel of engineers with 10-15 years of industry
experience will share their vision of the future of the grid.
How will the technology be implemented and accepted?
Can electric utilities compete for and retain customers if
the regulatory business model changes?
This panel will specifically address the technology of
artificial intelligence, the business model of a distributed
system (platform) operator with no end-user customer
connection, and their opinions on working with big
social media (data) companies to retain a retail customer
relationship as long as possible among many other topics.
It will be a long-term perspective from young people
engaged in the front lines today.

Distribution Network-Aware DER Coordination

A variety of strategies exist for coordinating distributed
energy resources (DERs) including distributed
generation, storage, and flexible loads to provide
services to the bulk power system. However, many of
these strategies ignore the impact of DER coordination
on the distribution network, for example, DER
coordination can lead to over-/under-voltages, transformer
overloading, and other negative impacts. This
panel will bring together researchers developing a variety
of network-aware DER coordination approaches
that ensure benign or even beneficial distribution
network impacts.
