Preparing for Anything: Resilient System Design

Climate and other disruptions continue to present enormous
challenges for the fundamental role of utilities and
the communities they serve. This session will explore
lessons learned from recent extreme events, and also share
current efforts on improving the resiliency and reliability
of the grid to prepare for uncertainties in the future. Visit

New Dual Nameplate kVA Distribution Transformers

Transformer power ratings are defined as the amount
of output power that can be delivered without exceeding
nameplate kVA. Materials improvements have led to
greater output ratings and smaller physical sizes. However,
mandatory energy efficiency requirements by the US DOE
and physical design restraints for smaller units have resulted
in designs that are not limited by the rated temperature
rise and loading guides have struggled to accurately reflect
true capability. Distribution Transformer loading studies
show generally light loading but confusion for load-ability.
New high thermal class fluids for liquid filled transformers
coupled with increased electric vehicle charging and greater
heat pump use, suggest new dual nameplate ratings for
distribution transformers. The base rating would continue
to reflect traditional kVA parameters. The second rating
would be the nameplate kVA rating based on thermal class
of the insulation system. This panel examines several factors
to show the usefulness of this proposed change.

Offshore Wind Integration: DOE Perspectives and Lessons Learned
and Best Experiences of Europe

To accelerate grid decarbonization, many countries have
issued strong incentives to significantly increase the
installation of renewable energy resources, including
offshore wind. The U.S. government has set an ambitious
target to install offshore wind generators of 30 GW by
2030. In existing studies, the VSC-HVDC is considered
as the most effective solution for large-scale, long-distance
offshore wind power integration due to its advantages of
fast and independent control of active and reactive power,
the feasibility of multi-terminal dc grids, and black start
capability. The rapid growth of offshore wind power
poses great challenges to the modeling, control, protection,
and operation of mainland ac grids. Europe now has
a total installed offshore wind capacity of 25 GW across
12 countries. This panel will share the U.S. DOE perspectives
on offshore wind integration and lessons learned
and best experiences from Europe to provide good guidance
for the development of U.S. offshore wind.
