Lock, Stock & Barrel By John McGonigle Stick with the Basics M Y HIGH SCHOOL football coach used to always say, “Football is about basics, and the team that blocks, tackles and protects the ball the best while avoiding mistakes usually wins the game.” He was right, and his philosophy is correct for all activities. One must correctly learn how to perform the basic skills to succeed in a given sport or activity, and then practice correctly so skills become consistently correct. (Practice, consistent and succeed are the key words here.) I recently interviewed Benelli Shotgun exhibition shooter Tim Bradley about wingshooting. After trying to beg off from providing shooting tips by saying, “I’m not a shooting instructor,” he immediately proved to me he was wrong, because he offered the exact lessons a good shooting instructor would provide — he just worded things differently. Without going deeply into it, Bradley suggested ensuring that your shotgun fits John McGonigle correctly and handles easily. “I like a 20-gauge in a pump because its lighter, has less recoil and handles very well.” Talking to Bradley further it became obvious his comments referred less to the gauge than to the handling characteristics of a smoothbore. A major piece of advice from Bradley that American wing shooters ignore regularly is, “To improve, get professional instruction. It speeds up learning and saves you money on ammunition.” If you have purchased ammo recently you know how important the latter part of that sentence is — so is the first part of the sentence. Amateur golfers take instructions from pros, as do tennis players, so why not shooters? I honestly believe many of us (men) are just too darned macho to get instructions, we allow testosterone to have too much sway. Don’t get me wrong, testosterone is a good thing, and certainly has its place. That place, though, has nothing to do with shooting. Take a few shooting lessons. I was reading recently that skeet and sporting clays shooting were originated to replicate — and practice — shots taken when hunting, at least to some degree. I knew that, as do most readers. The real point of that information is not so much the hunting connection to those games, but rather the practice connection. Hunters start with lowered guns, because they do not know when a bird will flush.
