Sure Is BRADFORD — One day in June I spotted 2 woodcock, 6 adult ruffed grouse with 15 chicks, 16 adult turkeys with 42 poults, and too many songbirds and birds of prey to mention. I couldn’t help but think that my job was “for the birds.” After thinking about that for a few seconds, I smiled and thought how true it is. — WCO ANDREW TROUTMAN, WYALUSING Eye Opener 10-20-20 fertilizer now goes for $800 a ton; we paid $490 a ton in April. Roundup herbicide is quoted at $201.50 for 2½ gallons. In 2007, a 2½-gallon container was around $45. Without an increase in our working funds, this will make it even harder to accomplish our habitat improvement projects for wildlife. — LMO GEORGE J. MILLER, MARIENVILLE And Another Good Forecast During the late spring and early summer the weather provided the right mixture of warmth, sunshine and rain to ensure that habitat projects are growing well and wildlife reproduction was good here in the northcentral. My crews noticed an increase in fawns compared to the last few years, and turkey poults and grouse chicks seemed on the increase, too. For those hunters who put in the time, there should be ample amounts of game this fall. — LMO JOHN P. DZEMYAN, SMETHPORT Not Tellin’ BUTLER — At the annual Butler Farm Show, Deputy Dean Selfridge and I were manning our display when a fellow stopped by and mentioned that he and his son were scouting for the upcoming archery season when in one field they spotted 13 bucks and 22 does. An avid archer himself, Dean asked where the field was. The guy was quick to answer, “You can’t get there from here.” One thing is for sure, there are plenty of deer out there and Dean will have to do his own scouting. — WCO RANDY W. PILARCIK, PROSPECT Better Than a Heat Pump BRADFORD — I visited a man who had a beehive in the wall of his home for the last 16 years. He became concerned when a bear attempted to satisfy its sweet tooth. I told this story to expert beekeeper Dave English, who wasn’t surprised with what I told him, but Dave mentioned that the beehive is probably saving the homeowner money on his heating bills. Dave told me that beehives can generate temperatures up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. — WCO JOSEPH WENZEL, ATHENS Here’s To All You Do BEAVER — I would like to thank our HTE Coordinator Mr. George Sullivan.
