More Costly — Littering Fine or Gas? COLUMBIA — While investigating a littering incident on land open to public hunting and trapping, I discovered the discarded garbage had been transported and dumped there from a location more than 150 miles away by an individual from New Jersey. About a week after committing the unlawful act, the same individual met me at the scene (again driving more than 150 miles each way), cleaned up the rubbish and received a citation with a fine and costs totaling more than $500. Gasoline isn’t the only thing getting more expensive these days. — WCO JOHN MORACK, NUMIDIA Signing Them Up WYOMING — In an effort to update and organize all of our public access cooperators, we met personally with each landowner to resign a land access agreement. What I have found is that many lands have changed hands over the years, and many properties have been subdivided and sold. The good news is that there still are thousands of acres in the county available to those hunters who ask permission. Just be prepared to spend some time with the landowners; I averaged about an hour with each one, talking about various topics, including how they need hunters to help with the deer and turkey problems they are experiencing, and how they can’t believe some hunters say there are few deer. SETH, MILESBURG Didn’t want To Go Chain of Events Day 1- Raccoon gets killed by car on road. Day 2 - Same spot, crow gets killed by car while feeding on dead raccoon. Day 3 - Opossum gets skilled by car while feeding on crow and raccoon. Day 4 - Deer gets killed on highway at same spot; LMO watches traffic very closely while picking up deer. — LMO JERRY A. BISH, CONNEAUT LAKE WESTMORELAND — I picked up an American kestrel from a man who claimed it had an injured wing. After inspecting the bird I could not find any signs of an injury, but it would not fly. I decided to keep the bird for a few days and feed it to see if it would recover. I kept it in a cage in my garage and fed it ground beef. After several days the bird started to come around. When I went to release it the kestrel flew out of the cage and grasped the back of my shirt. I couldn’t reach it so I walked out in the field with the kestrel attached to my back. It took several minutes, but it finally decided to fly off. I was happy to see a successful recovery, but did not expect the bird to try to take the shirt off my back. Luckily, no one was around to witness it. — WCO SETH T. MESORAS, DELMONT GAME NEWS Really Makes You Wonder LYCOMING — The PGC Bureau of Wildlife Management states that only 40 percent of successful hunters send in deer report cards.
