Conservation News www.pgc.state.pa.us Spring gobbler season PRING GOBBLER season opens this month. Hunters 16 years old and younger may hunt on April 18. The regular season opens April 25 and runs through May 25. This marks the third year hunters under the age of 12 may hunt spring gobblers under the Mentored Youth Hunting Program. Participating youngsters must be accompanied by a mentor, a licensed person 21 years of age or older who is serving as counselor and guide. And just like with hunting squirrels, woodchucks and antlered deer under the Mentored Youth Hunting Program: • a mentor may not accompany more than one youngster (mentored youth or licensed junior hunter) at any time while engaged in hunting or related activities. • a mentor and mentored youth may not collectively possess more than one lawful hunting device at any given time while engaged in hunting or related activities. Mentor must carry the firearm (or bow) in transit to and from the spot. • a mentored youth must be stationary and within arm’s reach of the mentor at all times while in possession of any lawful hunting device while engaged in hunting or related activities. Turkeys taken under this program must be tagged. (See page 33 of the Digest.) When filling out the report S card shown in the Digest, check on the “Mentored Youth Hunter” box. Junior license holders, those 12 through 16 years of age, may also hunt on the April 18 “Youth Day” and, if under age 16, must be accompanied by an adult, as required by law. Again this year, hunters have the opportunity to take a second spring gobbler, providing they have obtained a Special Spring Gobbler Season License. The application period for this license closes on April 1, and hunters are allowed to submit only one application for the license during a license year. Hunters may apply online, by going to the agency’s website and clicking on the “Spring Gobbler Turkey Tag App” in the center of the homepage. Hunters also may apply over the counter at any of the Game Commission’s six region offices or the Harrisburg headquarters. The licenses, however, will be printed and mailed later. Fees are $21 for residents and $41 for nonresidents. Mailed applications must be sent to: Pennsylvania Game Commission, Special Spring Gobbler License, P.O. Box 61317, Harrisburg, PA 17106-1317. While spring gobbler hunters are no longer required to wear fluorescent orange, hunters must remain especially safety conscious, and are still strongly encouraged to wear at least a hat of fluorescent orange while moving, and Pennsylvania Game Commission: Managing wild birds, wild mammals and their habitats for current and future generations.
