DENNIS MULL estimates that by the time the opening day of the 2008 elk season arrived he had spent 40 hours scouting and walked 15 miles. Dennis’s job as an auto mechanic consumed his weekdays, but he found time to continue his elk research at home. Using forestry maps, he marked specific areas while scouting, and then he’d check the satellite images on his home computer. This was another method he chose to locate food plots and terrain elevations. He also studied details about elk on the Game Commission website. “I wanted to know everything there is to know about elk. I even wanted to think like an elk,” he chuckled. Dennis estimates that by the time the opening day of the 2008 elk season arrived he had spent 40 hours scouting and walked 15 miles, not to mention the hours spent on his home computer. His decision was to hunt Zone 10 on reclaimed stripmining land. To start, he chose a woods with a field tucked in the middle where he had spotted two bulls the day before. He and his adult son, Tommy, chose a location at the edge of the woods. Tommy had a camcorder to record all of the action, if there was to be any. They arrived at their spot at 5:30. When it was light enough to see, they spotted four bulls with two cows. Minutes ticked away like hours. The father and son were entertained by two bulls fighting as they waited anxiously for the legal hunting hour. Dennis and Tommy argued over which one of the bulls was the largest. “It turned out Tommy was right. DENNIS MULL’S 7x7 bull elk scored 342-5 Boone & Crockett Club points when it was officially measured at the PGC headquarters in Harrisburg. The bull ranks 10th in the Typical Elk Taken with Firearm category. He could see better than I could with the camcorder,” he conceded. Dennis was a nervous wreck as he waited until 6:30 a.m. Finally, the moment arrived. The sound of his .300 Winchester Magnum broke the silence and Dennis hurried to see his prize. When he approached the bull he could see it was a 7x7. Later he learned that it had an estimated live weight of 751 pounds with 48 inch beams. The antlers were rough scored at 332. Mull wasn’t one bit disappointed at harvesting a bull so soon into his hunt. “I spent so much time before the season scouting and preparing for the hunt, that to me, it was like a 5-week hunt.” And who is going to mount Dennis Mull’s elk?
