The National Rendezvous and Living History Foundation were formed in 1998 “to promote and educate about early American history.” What takes place here is nothing short of huge. Thousands of primitive camps live the trade era lifestyle, promote knowledge through seminars, sponsor games, campfire cooking, music and story telling. What it holds for the muzzleloading enthusiast is a college education in primitive skills. The public is invited on the weekend of September 26 and 27, but the rest of the week is restricted for those who dress and live the rendezvous lifestyle. A new experience being offered by the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association (www.nmlra.org) in Weston, West VirFun Game answers: staghorn sumac, spicebush 62 ginia, is the 2009 NMLRA Frolic. Scheduled for October 22-25 at the colorful site of the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum (seriously), the rifle frolic is different from a customary rendezvous. The focus is purely on traditional rifle shooters and hunters. Shooters are invited to bring flintlock and percussion rifles, trade guns, and muzzleloading shotguns and rifled muskets, along with cap and ball revolvers. According to Jim Fulmer, one of the Frolic organizers, “Emphasis is on education for visitors, beginners and experienced muzzleloaders. This historic site lends itself to history and tradition, and the venues include targets and competitions just like our forefathers, all experienced hunters, would have engaged in. Hunting with a traditional muzzleloader is more exciting than any other shooting sport. It makes a visual statement punctuated with loud clouds of sulfurous smoke that cause excitement in anyone who participates or watches in the events.
