bers as the Plains animals, did roam the wilds of the eastern U.S., including Pennsylvania. Some present day biologists speculate there may be some truth to their claims about wood bison being absent in Eastern states. The present day theory is that the eastern buffalo was not actually a wood bison, but rather an eastern version of the plains bison. These biologists believe the wild bison that roamed through the Eastern states, including North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania were an ecological, not a genetic, variant of the Plains bison. The bison of the East was described as being smaller and better adapted to the woodlands than the Plains version. The eastern bison reportedly also shared the full beard and neck mane of the Plains animal, as compared to the pointy beard and rudimentary neck mane of the wood bison of the far North. The Eastern bison was also smaller than the Plains bison, which in turn was smaller than the wood bison. But no matter the species, there appears to be ample evidence that bison once roamed the eastern states’ wilderness. Consider these facts. In 1540, Hernando De Soto’s men were presented bison furs by the Cherokee Native Americans of Northern Carolina. Much Cherokee lore has been passed down through the generations, and the Native Americans in the East knew the bison as yansa. In 1612, English explorer Samuel Argoll, in the area off of what is now Washington D.C., wrote of observing herds of wild cattle. These animals were described as heavy, slow and not as wild as other beasts of the wilderness. In 1729, Col William Byrd, while surveying the boundary between North Carolina and Virginia, recorded several buffalo sightings in the area of the Piedmont Mountains. In 1752, Bishop Spangenberg, on behalf of the Moravian Church, traveled the mountains of North Carolina and Virginia. In his diary he wrote of seeing several biAUGUST 2009 son and reported numerous well-traveled trails, which suggested many years of usage by herds. Historical reports from Virginia suggested that in the early 1700s, bison, which were reported to have little fear of man, were relatively common. By 1730 only a few of these big animals remained, mostly in the Blue Mountains. It is believed the last bison in Virginia was killed in 1830. The West Virginia wildlife agency’s website indicates the last buffalo killed in that state occurred in 1825, near Valley Head in Randolph County. It’s believed that while the Eastern bison migrated, it wasn’t to the extent as the Plains animal. Apparently, not all bison migrated, some lived in certain regions year-round. That appears to be particularly true in Pennsylvania, where some bison remained all year. The Keystone State was believed to be one of the northernmost sites of their migratory trek. For evidence that early day Pennsylvania colonists were enamored with buffalo, consider the landmarks named after this earlier day beast. There is a community named Buffalo in Washington County, Buffalo Cross Roads in Union County and Buffalo Mills in Bedford County. How about Buffalo Run in Centre County, Buffalo Springs in Lebanon County and Buffalo Creek in Armstrong County? There are Buffalo Townships in Butler, Perry, Union and Washington counties. Little Buffalo State Park in Perry County takes its name from Little Buffalo Creek, which meanders through the park. It’s been reported that for many centuries herds of bison migrated along the Appalachian Mountain range, moving north for the summer and south for the winter. A favored calving area was believed to be the region of what is presently known as Union, Snyder and Northumberland counties. In this area 13
