bowhunting conditions I believe the best stand placements are between feeding and bedding areas. Personally, I like to position my stands nearer bedding areas. If I place my stand close to open feeding areas I have found that deer often pass my stand in the darkness as they head into thicker cover for mid-morning snacks and, eventually, their bedding area. When placing my stand close to open feeding areas I find that the action can be over very quickly. Conversely, by placing my stand near the bedding areas, I extend my productive morning hunting hours as deer filter through the area from early to late morning. These same areas can also be excellent for evening hunts. As the season progresses and hunting pressure increases, deer will often wait until the cover of darkness to enter open feeding areas. But they will browse at the edge of their bedding area and in the area between the bedding area and open feeding area until darkness falls. A stand in these areas can be very productive. Such a stand will also be well suited for an extended afternoon hunt, because deer could pass by before the end of shooting hours. While hunting pressure plays an important role in deer movements during rifle season, most bowhunters do not figure it into their hunting plans. This year, however, hunting pressure could be a factor, depending on the type of area in which you are hunting. With the legalization of crossbows, there may be more than the usual number of new hunters in the woods, folks who have little or no bowhunting experience. These “new” hunters might be using their rifle hunting techniques and, after sitting on stand for a short while, may decide to “take a walk” in hopes of sneaking up on a wily buck. They won’t have much luck, but they will be moving deer around, one of which might just slip by your stand and offer a shot. This new wrinkle might be a good reason to spend a little extra time in the stand. If there is one thing that is constant 56 during bow season it is change. From the beginning of the season in October until the close in mid-November, the weather, cover and food sources undergo drastic changes. Deer quickly adapt to these changes, and to be successful, the bowhunter must do the same. Several years ago the acorn crop was sparse and widely spread. My wife and I found our morning and evening deer sightings had dropped drastically. Things were really slow when my wife noticed that we kept jumping a deer or two when we entered or left the woods. She suggested that we try hunting mid-day as opposed to morning and evening. I can honestly say that I thought she’d sat on her arrows. What was she thinking? Mornings and evenings were the best times; everyone knew that. It took several days before I gave in and agreed to try it. I figured that would stop all the nonsense. The next morning we slept in, had a good breakfast and headed for the woods about 9 o’clock. My wife’s plan was to hunt from about 10 till 4. We passed two bowhunters coming out as we headed to our stands deep in the woods. They looked at us as if we were nuts, and I had to agree. My wife spoke to them, and when they told her they had not seen anything, a small smile crept across her lips. She was getting that “I know I’m right look in her eye.” Between 11 and 3 that day we saw 8 deer, including two bucks. We used that technique for the next week with great results. We figured that because food was widely distributed in that area, deer were feeding longer at night and bedding down before daylight. They began feeding again during mid-day and bedding for a short time in late afternoon, before getting up after sundown to continue feeding at night. While I hate to admit it, my wife was exactly right. Under the conditions we had encountered, hunting mid-day was exactly the right thing to do. Deer quickly adapt to changing weather, but some conditions generate short-term GAME NEWS
