Rules of the Drive I LOOKED OFF to my right and saw the other hunter walking toward me. This surprised me, because the deer drive our group was putting on wasn’t over yet. I waited until he got near enough to hear me, and I whispered to him. “Take a stand by that tree over there,” I said, pointing to a large oak about 10 yards away. “The drivers are still coming through. I’ll talk to you later.” As I sat there, I wondered about why the hunter had left his post on the drive, and what I might say to him. I realized that his leaving his stand was probably my fault. I had forgotten that he was young and relatively inexperienced as a hunter. He’d shot a deer or two, but hadn’t been part of many organized drives, if any. From his actions, he obviously didn’t know the proper protocol. When this drive was over, I’d have to explain. I had learned some of what’s done and not done on a deer drive the hard way, myself. The first drive I was part of was a 2-person one. I was the stander and my husband, an experienced hunter, was the driver. It was archery season and a deer came toward me through the laurel. It went by out of range, at a slow walk and, because the leaves were wet and the walking quiet, I tried to sneak toward it for a shot. Either the deer disappeared or spooked or I couldn’t get close enough — I don’t reJANUARY 2010 member — in any case I had left my stand. I was still walking through the woods, when my husband caught up with me. “What are you doing here?” he asked. “Why did you leave your stand?” I told him about the deer and my following it. “You mean I wasn’t supposed to leave my post?” I innocently asked. “You never leave your stand until the driver comes through,” he told me. “Other deer could have been in front of me.” From that beginning, I got the same short-course instruction on stand etiquette I was now going to give the young hunter. I realized that no one knows what he should do on stand during a drive, if he hasn’t participated in one before, unless he is told what is expected of him ahead of time. As I stood there, waiting for the drive to finish and watching for deer, a part of my mind wondered how I should begin educating the young hunter who had left his stand. “The last stander to get in position determines when a drive starts,” I’d begin. “The last driver determines when the drive is over.” It used to be that the standers would say, “Give us 10 minutes to get into position, and then start the drive.” Nowadays, with portable radios for communication,
