Boomerang Effect
ELK — I have been assigned to the Ross Leffler School of Conservation in Harrisburg as the Resident Instructor for the 28th Class of cadets. During the week prior to the cadets arriving I sent out emails to each one. On day three they received their computers. Most of that day was spent in the classroom, but in the afternoon they took their computers to their rooms and accessed their emails for the first time. About 15 minutes after 28 cadets went to their rooms, my computer dinged, then dinged again, then again and for the next two minutes there was one continuous sound of emails coming to my computer. When the smoke had cleared, I had nearly 120 emails from the 28 cadets. I thought I’d get ahead of the game by sending all those e-mails, but I never thought about all the responses coming back. — WCO DOTY A. MCDOWELL, ST MARYS

Unusual
I checked five hunters who had harvested seven deer and had them hanging on a game pole. As I was looking over the deer one hunter asked if I noticed anything unusual. My law enforcement mentality went into gear but everything checked out with their licenses and tags. Suddenly I noticed what he was talking about. One deer had no tail at all, and it hadn’t been removed by the hunters. I’ve heard of the old tradition of cutting off a hunter’s shirttail if he missed a buck, so I’m wondering if deer have a similar tradition. — LMO JERRY A. BISH, CONNEAUT LAKE

PERRY — Fisher populations in the state have been growing since their reintroduction, and we recorded the first confirmed fisher here in this county in modern times when one was killed on a highway near Liverpool. B RADFO RD — PGC Food & Cover Corps worker John Hardenstine told me about seeing some odd tracks in the snow on SGL 12. He eliminated raccoon, skunk and bobcat. The evidence became clear when he found a porcupine carcass — the tracks were made by a fisher. — WCO VERN PERRY, MONROETON

TRAINING SCHOOL — I was thrilled to learn CPR, but when the instructors asked the class who the smallest and largest persons were, I cringed. Before I knew it, I was trying to lower 280-pound Cadet Musser gently to the floor by bracing him up with my 122-pound frame. WAYNE — I responded to a roadkilled bear incident and after furnishing the ear tag numbers was told that the bear had been tagged a year earlier and weighed 550 pounds at that time. After weighing the bruin, it had gained more than 100 pounds. — WCO FRANK DOOLEY, TYLER HILL
