knife was never particularly sharp, but it worked for this duty. Many hunters today carry small pocket knives when they hunt, particularly when they hunt small game, using it to gut rabbits, squirrels and other game they bag while afield. Personally, I prefer to clean small game when I get home, to better keep it free from becoming contaminated. My choice of pocket knife has evolved over time. While I used to favor a traditional wood or plastic handled single-blade pocket knife, today I prefer a multi-tool Swiss Army knife. Because much of my hunting is with muzzleloaders, the particular Swiss Army knife I use is a perfect companion for my flintlock. I can use it to cut bullet patches, as I prefer cutting my own. The screwdriver attachments allow me to safely tighten screws on the gun’s lock, which on some guns can become loose if they’re used a lot. I can also use the knife tool to loosen the hammer screw to replace worn flints. In the field or on the range, I can use it to safely adjust a scope. Also, there are a variety of can opening devices that come in handy in camp. I use the smaller officer’s model, which is small enough and slim enough to fit in my pocket comfortably and has the tools I need. Some guys prefer other types of multi-tools, but they are not true knives, and are bulkier than I like. To each his own. I believe a pocket knife should fit in your pocket, and not in a holster. Pocket knives are about light weight convenience. As of late, I have added another kind of pocket knife to my repertoire. It is a rather modernistic Buck lock-back folding knife. I found it

out in the woods one day, and someone’s loss was my gain. It is only about four inches long when folded, has an aluminum handle, and a clip to slide it over a belt. But, despite its size, it is a blade designed for big game, as it is a lock-back. Its short blade makes for exacting cuts, and I use it also for small game cleaning and skinning of trap catches. It’s also nice when I go deer hunting and don’t feel like sliding a fixed blade knife onto my belt. Its small, compact size fits nicely in my pocket. If it ever decides to desert me, like it did the last owner, I am sure its next owner will appreciate its advantages. What is strange is that I would have never considered purchasing this knife, because I prefer knives with either wood or bone, or plastic handles made to look like wood or bone. This aluminum handle looks like a space age design but, typical of most Buck products, it cuts well and feels good in the hand. The blade stays nice and sharp for a long time, and it is relatively easy to sharpen. The relatively short blade is great for making precise cuts and is nice when I am skinning a coon or a red fox. Whether it is in the fur shed or the deer stand, this is a handy knife. I have always had a love affair with fixed-blade knives. My first one, which I still have, was a Schrade Uncle Henry knife. It is a rather large knife with a simulated staghorn handle, and it looks good. But the knife is hard to sharpen without major tools. In fact, I once took it to a hardware store that had sharpening tools for lawn mowers to get a good, sharp blade on it. I have used it for
