Vanished Mammals
ECENTLY SCIENTISTS in the upper Midwest analyzed a fossilized jawbone from a giant beaver, which had been found in southern Wisconsin. Carbon dating showed that the beaver lived approximately 14,500 years ago. It was twice the size of the beavers that now inhabit North America. Fossils of pollen and plants, discovered nearby, showed that the environment had been cold and marshy, with few trees. The giant beaver probably ate mainly aquatic plants — like a miniature hippopotamus, the scientists suggested. The Pleistocene Epoch — it began a million and a half years ago and lasted until 10 millennia in the past, when the so-called ice ages ended — is sometimes called the Age of Mammals. The variety of mammalian species living at that time is staggering. In North America alone were all the mammals we have today, plus various sorts of wild horses, asses, zebras, ground sloths, tapirs, llamas, capybaras and camels. During the Pleistocene, today’s gray wolf abounded, as did the larger and more formidable dire wolf. Several species of dogs and hyenas occupied parts of North America. So did our present-day wolverine, along with an even bigger and probably equally truculent variety known as “the voracious flesh-eater.” The short-faced bear dominated two lesser species, the grizzly and black bear. Pleistocene cats ranged from smallish ones, like the bobcat, up to great predators larger than today’s lions and tigers. There were saber-toothed lions, scimitar cats (they likely preyed on mastodon calves), and an American lion that was half again as big as the modern African kind. All of them, right here in North America. There were five kinds of elephants. According to a publication of the state museum of Pennsylvania, the remains of mammoths and mastodons have turned up in 26 counties in the Keystone State. Do you know the pawpaw, a tree found in southern Pennsylvania? It likely evolved its dangling, fleshy fruit with large seeds to be eaten and then spread across the landscape by feeding pachyderms. Some evolutionary biologists believe that the dense thorns of hawthorns were a defense against massive browsing creatures eating the plants’ foliage. The Age of Mammals came to an end around 10,000 years ago, with the great Pleistocene extinction, when three-quarters of the world’s large mammals died out. Scientists suspect that those megafauna were unable to adapt to rapid changes in the earth’s climate. The rise of human hunters may have played a role. Ten thousand years ago. Not such a long time, at all.
