He cOOl, crisp October morning brought welcome relief from the dog days of summer. leaves of autumn had transformed the woodlots around my father’s country home into a kaleidoscope of brilliant colors. As summer released its grip on the changing leaves, they gently fluttered to the forest floor, forming a colorful carpet that was ever changing at the wind’s discretion. On the back border of the property stood a splendid stand of beech, the trees’ light gray boles and brilliant leaves challenging the beauty of any aspen stand in the north woods. The feel of the smooth bark offered a medium for carving and held a wealth of information about past inhabitants of this area. Their large trunks, some two feet in diameter, read like a who’s who of our neighborhood. Summer had been good to this woodlot and it responded by producing a bumper crop of beechnuts, the pods clung to the branches like clusters of grapes hanging from a vine. When admiring this grandeur one’s mind quickly turns to pre-season shooting and the upcoming hunting season. The treetops were alive with gray
squirrels busily gathering their winter cache, rekindling memories of past hunts retold many times by my grandfather. Angelo had always been an active outdoorsman, and from my early childhood had encouraged me to participate. His love of training beagles and pursuing cottontails through the brushpiles and fencerows that were so abundant in our area was legendary. However, for the past few years his hunting had been limited to stories told from his armchair, where he spent most of his days watching TV. I never experienced the pleasure of sharing a hunt with him, except from his tales. His hunting days had been curtailed due to breathing problems, exasperated by working 40 years in a western Pennsylvania coal mine before the advent of OSHA and respirators. When I told Grandpa about this squirrel glut, a sudden transformation occurred. His eyes twinkled and his voice bubbled with a vigor that had been vacant for many years. Then, after a few silent moments, he smiled
