in line in the thick clearcuts, and also indicates safe zones of fire. All of this would come into play many times that day. Not yet one-third of the way through the drive, a lone shot rang out from one of the watchers. Within a minute the announcement came over the radio that Corey had a bear down. His success fueled the group’s enthusiasm. Not long after that announcement, shooting began on the left side of the drive and worked its way toward the right. Then silence settled in. The drive stopped as we looked for any signs of a hit on the three or four bruins that broke back through the line of drivers. While no blood trails were found, an announcement came over the radio that Scott had connected on the second bear of the day. Two bears taken in one drive was a first for our group. While we reassembled to finish the drive another series of shots from the watchers rang out. Yet another bruin took flight across the open right-ofway and the watcher managed to hit the bear. He stood on the blood trail and waited while we finished out the drive. We counted 23 shots fired on the first drive. While we were excited about that part, our excitement was somewhat diminished, however, be-
cause we never found the third bruin after an extensive search and subsequent drive through the area where it fled. Regrouping, we decided to push out a piece of cover that had produced for us in the past. Personally, it is my favorite drive, because I was the lucky hunter who tagged a bear out of it in 2007. The piece of ground is an 8-year-old clearcut that lies in a rectangular shape and is flanked on one side by a wide pipeline, which is the way we like to push it out if the wind allows. On this day, the wind was good for a drive in that direction. Other than a few deer cutting across the pipeline, the drive was quiet until the last moments of the push. Then a bruin tried to break across the right side of the drive, but came within sight of a couple of the drivers and one flanker. A flurry of shots rang out in quick succession, with Josh putting the third bear of the day on the ground. It was nearly noon at this point and time for a break. Normally we have four or five drives completed by this time, but getting three bears out of the woods and looking for the hit one had put us behind schedule. Nobody was complaining, though, and by then more than half of the group had shooting at a bear. Not bad for an area that was once considered on the fringe of good bear habitat. Our tanks refueled, we again set out for the woods with yet another thick clear-
