come back to bite us. A bowhunter should have full faith and trust in the equipment he is using. When he or she comes to full draw with a trophy animal in the sight, the release of the arrow should be made with full confidence. But long before you reach that moment of truth, consider other such horseshoe nails, the “small stuff” that may conspire to assure or thwart your success. The smallest accessories to your compound bow can create the biggest problems. For my money, the most critical accoutrements include peep sights, kisser buttons, sight pins, rests, nocks and string silencers. All six of these little elements play key roles in determining the success (or lack thereof) of every shot and, thus, the success or failure of the hunt itself. Peep Sights These accessories work in tandem with sight pins. Precise alignment between the two is critical for hitting what you’re aiming at. As described in the opening of this piece, peeps can be impacted and even rendered useless by shadow and light. Many peeps are designed to twist as the string is pulled back when the bow is drawn. Ideally, at full draw the aperture of the peep positions itself perfectly with the archer’s aiming eye. However, on occasion these peeps may not function properly and fail to rotate into their proper position. With the archer unable to sight through the misaligned aperture, a faulty shot is sure to follow. In disgust, I removed the peep sight from my bowstring a few hours after it cost me that buck, and I haven’t used one since. Now I simply rely on a lot of practice and my trusty kisser button to accurately anchor my shots. Kisser Buttons Kisser buttons are minute yet often vital accessories that play a major role for the vast majority of archers and bowhunters who rely on them. Like peep sights, kisser buttons are affixed to the bowstring. When the archer comes to full draw, the

kisser button will rest at the corner of the right side of his or her mouth, touching both upper and lower lips (left side for left-handed shooters). For most archers, proper positioning of the kisser button is the key component in establishing a solid, consistent anchor before releasing the shot. The kisser is just one element of three that combine to anchor and sight in the shot. The other two are the peep sight and the sight pin itself. Together the three form the points of a triangle — one at the corner of the mouth, one at the eye and the third at the hand of the extended arm gripping the bow — all of which, at least in theory, merge together to ensure the best accuracy possible. But as with peep sights, kisser buttons are also problematic and can come loose or get out of position through overuse, abuse, disuse and changes in shooting form or draw length as a result of practice or lack thereof. Sight Pins The third and central component in the typical bowhunter’s anchoring and sighting “triad” is the sight pin itself, another example of the small stuff that should be sweated. Like buttons and peeps, pins can also come loose and slide out of place. But unlike buttons and peeps, which once installed are not adjustable unless removed and installed again, sight pins can be adjusted both vertically and laterally by loosening and tightening positioning screws. When archers are sighting in their bows, without exception, they are adjusting the pins. Because sight pins are designed to be adjustable, they are also more prone to accidental misalignment than peeps or kissers. This can happen due to everyday wear and tear (dropping the bow, repeated shooting and practice, hoisting the bow to the stand, etc.) that loosens the screws and repositions the pins. If undetected, such misalignment can lead to some rather ugly shooting outcomes. Another source of pin problems is the multiple pin sight. One of the most comGAME NEWS
