So, total cost for parts was around $200. When all the parts arrived, time was spent in chambering and barreling up the action, cutting the barrel to 20 inches, drilling and tapping for the sights, along with polishing and bluing, and fitting the trigger and safety. After final fitting of the barreled action into the stock, minor shaping and sanding was completed. The stock was finished off with a thick recoil pad, Watco stain and a dull Tru-Oil finish. When all was said and done, it turned out to be a simple but elegant rifle, weighing in at about 6½ pounds. It carried light, came to the shoulder with the sights right on the money with good cheek support. The next step was to go to the range and see what kind of accuracy it would deliver. I loaded up six different loads with 200and 250-grain spire bullets using IMR 3031 and 4320 powders. Not having a chronograph at the time, I assumed that the loads would come close to the speeds published (never a completely correct assumption), but I did notice that they were noticeably faster than any .35 Remington load I had shot, and certainly hit with more authority. Whatever the velocities were, though, once the groups were centered at 25 yards, it didn’t take but minor adjustment to be right on at 100 yards. If memory serves me correctly, the 250-grain bullet hit about 1½ inches below the 200-grain slug, and they both grouped under 2 MOA in their perspective weights at 100 yards. I do remember a definite difference in recoil between the two bullet weights. Two of the groups had a couple of bullet holes touching, so it showed promise if I exercised careful handloading. Once I was on at 100 yards, I tried for the water filled gallon jugs at 200 yards, and with a little hold over (centering the Fun Game answers: All statements are true; HYPOTHERMIA.

bead on top of the jug) it wasn’t difficult to vaporize them. That afternoon there were several shooters at other benches, and even though they all took notice and made curious mention of my smaller unscoped rifle, there was a fellow next to me who took a particular curiosity and inquired more about it, as well as the cartridge. After telling him that it was my first project out of school, I asked if he would like to handle and shoot it. After snapping it up to his shoulder several times, he commented, “Man, this fits like a glove and the sights line up perfectly, right when my cheek hits the stock.” After shooting a couple of rounds he looked at the group through the spotting scope and said, “Are you interested in selling this? I’ll give you more than what you put into it.” After declining his offer he became determined, and after bantering back and forth during the few minutes I was exploding those jugs at 200 yards, his offers increased to where I realized that I could build two with a little money left over. So he peeled off money from his clip (apparently he wasn’t married) and the rifle and I parted company. At that time a standard factory rifle didn’t cost near that much, but who was I to argue with a fellow who was willing to part with that kind of cash, just to have something a little different. The ironic part about this incident is that I never took the time and effort to build another one. Throughout the years, though, I did end up shooting and handloading with several other factory rifles in the .358 Winchester, and always thought a lot of it as a big game cartridge. In 1955 Winchester took the .308 cartridge case and necked it up to 35-caliber, introducing the .358 Winchester in their new Featherweight Model 70, and a year later in their Model 88 hammerless lever action. The .358 Winchester was meant to fill the void between the fading Model 71 .348 Winchester that threw a flat nose 200-grain bullet at 2,500 fps (other loads included a 250-grain at 2,300 fps and a
