expensive, but far more stealthy than one using a strobe flash, and is less likely to call attention to itself when it takes a photo. Before belting a new trail camera to a tree there are several steps that need to be taken to ensure good quality photos. The first thing to do is to become familiar with how to set up and operate the new camera. Before heading to the woods, I set my camera up in the maple tree in my backyard and walk past it in daylight and at night. The nighttime range will be much shorter than the daytime range for most cameras, so it’s important to know the maximum nighttime range of your camera. By walking by in the dark at various ranges and then reviewing the images, a hunter can get a pretty good idea as where to set the camera in the woods to get the best possible photos. Some cameras have a nighttime range up to 45 feet, but most have a range much shorter.
When placing the camera consideration must be given to the angle and the height above the ground. It is advisable not to have the camera pointed either directly east or west, because the rising and setting sun will negatively affect picture quality. I like placing my cameras about 3½ feet above the ground and facing either north or south. Trail cameras can cost anywhere from $100 to $500, and it’s safe to say you’ll get what you pay for. Trail cameras have become important scouting tools to thousands of hunters, because they provide a sense of the number of animals in a particular hunting location, and even provide a clue as to the size of the bucks. I like knowing there are deer where I’m hunting, even if I’m not seeing them during daylight hours. If you think there are no deer in the areas you hunt, set out a scouting camera. The results will surprise you.
