Two Cat Night
S CHRISTMAS was approaching, my wife and I asked our two sons to put their Christmas lists together. Before we mailed them off to Santa, we checked over the lists. The lists included the usual teenage electronics with X-Boxes and MP3 players, but our youngest son, who just turned 12, had traps and trapping supplies as his first item. Since Colton was eight he had spend part of his Christmas vacation accompanying me and “Papaw” trapping, hunting grouse and flintlock hunting at our cabin. For Christmas it was my job to shop for the outdoor supplies. I took an evening and went to Mike Spittle’s trapping shop. I told Mike that I was shopping for a Christmas present for a 12-year-old and wanted traps that would be multipurpose for raccoons, fox, bobcat and coyote. He recommended the 1½ Dukes, which I thought were a little small, but he reassured me they had plenty of power to catch everything. He put together a mixture of lures, trapping tools and a dozen of the 1½s. When I had him ring the bill up, it didn’t quite add up. I asked him if it was correct and he said, “Yes, I always give a discount for getting new young trappers started.” I’m sure he did his part in creating a lifelong trapper. Christmas was now just two weeks away and because I’m a school teacher at Milton Hershey School I get two weeks off for the Christmas break. When

I bought Colton’s hunting license back in September, I made sure to include a bobcat license so he could try his luck at catching his first cat. Being that the bobcat season started on December 18, I asked some hunting friends and Papaw if they would go along the week before Christmas so I could scout things out for Colton’s trapping trip I had planned after Christmas. On the morning of December 18 I packed up and Papaw and I headed north for a few days. When we got to camp, Dennis and Larry, who had arrived earlier in the morning, already scouted things out being that there was an inch of new snow. Papaw was Larry’s 8th grade Social Studies teacher more than 45 years ago. Papaw promised to show him a few old bobcat trapping tricks that he was taught by “Bobcat Charlie,” but first he had to promise he would be a better student now than he was in school. Because they saw so much fresh sign in the new snow, they decided they would put a few sets out for bobcats to see if the old teacher really knew what he was talking about.
