feed in the warmth of the sun, yet sink into the safety of its burrow at the first hint of danger. Chuck holes in the field always made Dad mad, because there was always the chance a horse would step into the burrow while pulling a mowing machine and break a leg. So that morning, while the fog was still rising along the Susquehanna, Dad and I were working our way, one slow step at a time, along the center hedge until we came to a place where there was a burrow in the hedge, and another in the field about 50 or 60 feet away from the hedge. The fringe of goldenrod and timothy that grew between the edge of the hedge and the field was still wet with dew when we backed into it and sat down and waited. It seemed to me we had been there an hour or longer when Dad raised the shotgun and thumbed the hammer back to full cock. I looked into the field in the direction the gun was pointed but didn’t see a thing, except the mound of raw dirt that marked the location of the woodchuck’s burrow. Dad just sat there with his elbows on his knees, squinting along the barrel in the direction of that mound of dirt. I squinted at it, too, until my eyes burned, but saw nothing but the dirt pile. Then, all of a sudden, what I had thought was a little lump of dirt about the size of a walnut pushed its way upward until I could see the whole head of a woodchuck. Then, slowly, the head sank from view, almost as though it had never been there in the first place. I started to say something, but a sharp nudge from Dad’s elbow kept me quiet. After what seemed like an eternity, but was only five minutes, I watched as the head and then the whole woodchuck crawled out of the burrow and sat up to survey the surroundings. I prepared myself for the muzzle blast,

but Dad didn’t touch that shrouded trigger until the woodchuck had moved away from its burrow and again stretched upward to study its surroundings. Then the old Iver Johnson belched a load of No. 4 shot and the woodchuck crumpled in a heap. “I thought you were never going to shoot,” I said. Dad looked at me and grinned. “Never shoot a woodchuck while it’s sitting on the edge of its burrow,” he said. “All too often they’ll get back down their hole during those last few seconds.” I nodded like I understood, and then watched as Dad set to work field-dressing and removing the hide. “These old woodchucks,” he said, “are hard enough to skin without leaving the hide on for a couple of hours.” Afterward, he laid the fielddressed carcass on a waxed bread wrapper to let it cool. We got three more woodchucks that day —one young one and two average-size ones —and it wasn’t until he was wrapping the last one that I mentioned the fact that there weren’t very many No. 4 pellets in
