As an eligible cooperator in the Game Commission’s Hunter Access Program, the Beaverdale Sportsmens Club applied for funding through the Voluntary Public Access Habitat Improvement Program (VPA-HIP). With these funds they can improve habitat for the imperiled golden wing warbler, as well as other bird and mammal species, by timbering some of their wooded property. Other forested areas will be sprayed to control unwanted species, such as fern and striped maple that inhibit forest regeneration. Helping Wildlife

Elk — After nearly 35 years of wearing a Game Commission uniform I have finally decided to pass the law enforcement torch to a younger officer. With my final Field Note I would like to thank all of the various public, fellow officers and agency personnel who have provided the assistance that contributed to such an interesting and rewarding career. I have lived the dream career, have no regrets and wouldn’t hesitate to do it all again. Although I will certainly miss the work, it’s now time to enjoy my retirement years spending more time as a hunter. — WcO Dick bODenhOrn, riDGWay Huntingdon — I was doing an Envirothon study session with a local school and took in various animal skulls to help them with their wildlife identification section of the test. It soon became apparent that they watched too much Discovery channel when the bear skull was thought to be the skull of a sasquatch. — WcO aMy nabOZny, PeterSburG I attended the PA Prescribed Fire Council meeting in Harrisburg, where I had the opportunity to discuss fire-related topics with other agencies and non-government organizations. It was interesting to hear the perspectives of others who use prescribed fire for managing grasses and woodlands, and creating wildlife habitat. MontgoMEry — I was working with our deer team in tagging trapped animals, and while holding one deer down I looked over my shoulder and saw one of the members (who will remain anonymous) go flying through the air while another was underneath the deer. With a little help the deer was rolled off and the team was able to get back to work.
