pass through the heart and the center of the lungs. A general rule often quoted is to shoot just behind the deer’s front leg and half way up the deer. Personally, I feel the shot should be placed slightly lower than center for several reasons. Coming down from the back of the deer you have hair, hide, fat, muscle and backbone. Next there is a space below the backbone and above the lungs that runs the length of the chest cavity and is about the diameter of a medium sized apple. This means the top of the lungs can easily be 3 to 4 inches down from the very top of the deer’s back, depending upon the physical size of the animal. An arrow placed through that space between the backbone and lungs will zip right through hair, hide and soft tissue. The arrow will be covered with a thin layer of greasy fat and little or no blood. Therefore, the center of the lungs actually lies slightly lower than the center of the deer’s body, making the perfect spot right behind the front leg and slightly below center. We all know that deer can be fatally wounded with a hit in various parts of its body, but what we are doing here is setting ourselves up for the best shot possible and, therefore, our discussion will focus on the heart-lung area as our primary target. For years bowhunters practiced at a paper plate, which is approximately 9 to 91/2 inches in diameter. Considering the heart-lung and liver as being the primary target area, the size of the kill area presented is slightly larger than the 9 inch plate, but it’s important to keep your arrow as close to the center of the target area as possible, which provides the maximum room for error. If your arrow goes dead center, you will have a doublelung hit, which will put the animal down quickly. If the arrow is slightly high, you will still have a double-lung hit, and if the arrow is low, you will have a combination heart and lung hit, which is normally fatal within 60 yards or less. If the arrow is slightly to the rear, you will strike the liver

which, although a less desirable hit, will still prove fatal although leaving a poorer blood trail. While a broadside shot is ideal, it actually seldom occurs. Angled shots are more common, and when hunting from a treestand, which is what most bowhunters do, the angles are compounded. Nonetheless, the heart-lung area should still remain your primary target. The shot I prefer is the quartering-away shot, which allows the arrow to enter the soft tissue behind the shoulder and angle forward into the kill zone. This means, depending upon the severity of the angle, you need to shoot a little farther back. Remember, you must visualize where the heart-lung area is located within the animal to properly determine exactly where you should aim. Some bowhunters do this by aiming for the exit hole. In other words try to image where the arrow will exit the animal and this, in turn, determines where it should enter. I have talked to several bowhunters who have said they have deliberately aimed for the neck or spine. While I have killed deer with such hits, it was when I missed my target and the arrow, luckily, struck an artery or the spinal column. A very small target, the spine’s position cannot always be readily determined. Just in front of the shoulders where the neck forms, the spine drops down several inches before going upward to the base of the skull. I strongly recommend against aiming for the spine or neck with a bow. An arrow, unlike a bullet, has no shocking power, and the odds are great that you will simply wound the animal. This type of shot is unethical and should never be attempted. Now that we know “Where” you should shoot, let’s discuss “When” to shoot or, in some cases, “When not” to shoot. In spite of all the advancements made in archery equipment, bowhunting is still a short-range sport. With practice and proper set-up, a bow in the hands of an experienced shooter is accurate to relatively
