Bradford — During a court sentencing  hearing involving a poaching case I used the April issue of Game	News as a reference  to show the judge an article about “Operation Talon,” a statewide initiative to curb poaching.  An  evidence photo  from  this  particular case was used in the referenced  article. After the hearing, one of the defendants asked me if he could have my copy of  Game	News. I quickly told him he’d have  to buy his own. The judge overheard and  thought it was humorous. — WCO JOseph Wenzel, Athens

More Than Just a Good Read

MCKean — An  individual  called  the  region  office  and  reported  that  he  had  discovered the skeletal remains of a bear with “99” on an ear tag. Records indicated that  the  bear  with  that  tag  number  was captured in 1979, which would make it the oldest bear ever recorded in Pennsylvania.  The region staff became very excited and  requested  that  I  recover  the  skull  and  jawbone for possible analysis and display.  Upon discovery of the skeletal remains it  was quickly determined that the remains  were that of a domestic pig and the ear tag was a tag used in an auction. To the credit  of the guy who discovered the skeltal remains, the pig did have black hair, but it  still warrants a Field Note. — WCO thOMAs M. sAbOlCik, pOrt Allegheny LMO  Jim  Jolley  asked  about  a  small  wooden box near my desk and I explained  that it was an artificial roost box for solitary  male bats. “Ah, a ‘batchelor’ pad,” Jim said.  I should have seen that one coming. —nOrthCentrAl regiOn i & e supervisOr  WilliAM WilliAMs, bentOn
