spend time with family and friends,” 30 percent. When asked how their interest in deer hunting has changed in the last five years, “number and/or quality of antlered deer seen or harvested” was the most common change, 31 percent, followed by “time to hunt,” 17 percent; “place to hunt,” 14 percent; and “number of antlerless deer seen or harvested,” 12 percent. Probably no surprise, hunters would like to see more deer. When asked about the deer population in the WMU where they hunt, 60 percent said it was decreasing, 32 percent said it was about the same, and 8 percent said it was increasing. Similarly, 66 percent thought the deer population was too low in the WMU where they hunt; 31 percent thought it was about right; and 3 percent too high. When asked about antler restrictions in the WMUs where they hunt, 61 percent agreed with them, 17 per-
cent didn’t agree or disagree, and 22 percent disagreed. Sixty-two percent of hunters hunted in the WMU where they live, and on average, hunters travel 15 miles, one way, to hunt deer. When asked what the best way is to provide deer hunting information, 20 percent said the Hunting and Trapping Digest, 16 percent said newspapers, 15 percent said Game News, and 14 percent said the PGC website. With today’s computer technology, the Game Commission will be using surveys to gather information to ultimately provide the best hunting opportunities possible, both now and in the future.
