Straight from the Bowstring By John Kasun Paying attention to equipment details will shrink your groups and greatly increase your chances of success. T HIS PAST YEAR marked my 57th bowhunting season and during that time I have filled the majority of my deer tags in and out of state with a bow. Bowhunting opportunities normally come quickly and often when least expected. In an instant your entire season can be one to brag about or it can be gone in a heartbeat. The key to constant bowhunting success is eliminating mistakes and paying attention to the smallest details. I learned very quickly that as I fine-tuned my set-ups and hunting techniques my success rate increased. These fine-tuning techniques apply to every aspect of the sport from preseason scouting, scent control, stand placement, knowledge of deer habits and your hunting area, in addition to your shooting skill and tuning of your basic bowhunting equipment. The act of fine-tuning in these areas results in seeing more deer, getting closer for the shot and shooting with greater accuracy under all conditions. Combined, they add up to increased success afield. While volumes can be written on each area mentioned in this month’s column, I’ll focus on fine-tuning your hunting set-up and getting the best performance from your bowhunting gear. It is important that your equipment is set up THE WHISKER BISCUIT is an excellent arrow rest for hunting. It keeps the arrow on the rest while in the stand or when still-hunting.
