Not Forgotten

butler — When a WCO arrives in a 
district as a new officer he or she often 
relies on a seasoned deputy to show the 
area. When I came into the district in 
1999  that  deputy  was  Clayton  “Ike” 
Eisenbrown. Ike was the local legend 
who  everyone  knew,  and  when  he 
retired as a deputy he had 28 years of 
service.  He  was  also  a  dedicated  and 
active  HTE  instructor  for  more  than 
40  years.  This  dedicated  volunteer 
recently  passed  away  and  the  agency 
and  the  sportsmen  of  the  state  will 
miss him.

Good Advice

erie — I  ran  into  several  hunters 
during  the  deer  season  who  had  removed  all  but  the  top  two  panels  of 
their hunting license. I guess they saw 
the turkey tags and thought they didn’t 
need them, not realizing the final portion of the license is the deer harvest 
tag.  Hunters  need  to  make  sure  they 
keep  their  entire  license  with  them, 
including the kill tag.

It’s All In a Name

Sullivan — A landowner reported a 
bear that had been ripping up her yard. 
Evidently the bear had been searching 
for grubs. I told her that I’d bring a culvert trap over to catch and relocate it, 
but when I was about to leave she said, 
“Yeah, he’s been having a real field day

here.” I said that it was probably more 
Cumberland — I got many positive 
like  a  “field  night,”  because  the  bear 
hadn’t been seen. The look on her face  comments  from  small  game  hunters 
about the increased pheasant stocking 
told me I had a Field Note.

Something to Always Remember

venango — Deputy Ken Clark and 
I  checked  a  hunter  the  first  week  of 
the deer season who had killed a nice 
buck. He used his ATV to retrieve the 
deer from his private property, but in 
his excitement he had forgotten to unload his firearm. This is how accidents 
happen,  so  remember  safety  first.  All 
firearms  must  be  unloaded  when  in, 
on  or  against  a  motorized  vehicle  of 
any kind.

Times Have Changed

I recently spent a lot of time mapping  various  drives  to  computers  for 
use  in  our  Geographical  Information 
System. This is a very technical mapping system that we use in our Comprehensive Game Lands Plans. When 
land  managers  got  together  we  used 
to talk about tractors, acorns, rabbits, 
etc.  Now  we  discuss  raster  files  and 
metadata.
