side, and it was difficult to see. I advised
the driver and alerted Bob that I was
going to remove the operator from the
vehicle. I quickly searched him for any
weapons and placed him in front of his
vehicle’s headlights. When I got the
driver out of the car, it appeared that
he was sitting on a gun barrel. I advised
Bob that we had a gun. As this was
occurring, Rich Walton got a hold of
Deputy Steve Hanczar (now a WCO).
He was glad to assist. With Steve on
the scene, I was more comfortable
with the situation.
In searching the guy sitting in the
middle, we found that he had the bolt
from the .22 rifle stashed in his pants.
There was 22-caliber ammunition all
over the seat and on the floor. These
poachers weren’t rookies, and in fact
Rich started to run their information
and it was determined that two of the
individuals had been arrested previously for poaching by WCO Chet Cinnamella in neighboring Lackawanna
County two years prior. At this point
the only thing concrete that I had was
that they were spotlighting while in
possession of a firearm.

With Steve and Bob watching over
two of the suspects, I was able to put
the guy who appeared to be the weakest link in my vehicle. He was the
guy stuck in the middle, and as I had
hoped the guy spilled his guts on his
buddies. It turned out this particular
guy felt guilty about shooting at deer
in the woods with a .22, knowing full
well that most of them would wander
off to die an agonizing death. All three
admitted to trying to kill at least one
deer and pled guilty to those and additional charges.
This was at least the
third time I can
recall while
in Luzerne
County that
Rich Walton
called me on
my bag phone
on a cat night
and asked me
what was going
on when I had
just heard a
shot. In those
instances, we apprehended the poachers. I
must admit that in more than 30 years,
a lot of cat nights were uneventful, but
truth be told, there were enough successful cat nights to make it worth
mentioning. As I wind down my career
in the rural landscape of the northern
tier, there have been many cat nights
for me. I no longer have the luxury of
having all the help I once had. Most of
my patrol time is spent alone and in
deep thought reflecting on those days
gone by. I’m certain there will be more
cat nights to come, but, sadly, there will
never be another cat night for me on
Tiger Hill.
