in the hands. The “corncob”
style forend makes working
the slide action a snap.
Let me say right
up front — if
you’ve never
done it — there’s
no better way to
hunt cottontails
than by listening to a pack of hounds
baying on the trail of a cottontail being
brought back around, anticipating the
rabbit spurting through an opening in
the brush in front of you.
I noticed on that first hunt with
Steve and his friends, after photos of
the hunt’s bag with hunters and dogs,
was that all three hunters carried .410
shotguns. I felt over-gunned with my
side-by-side 20-gauge.
Now, granted, these were all experienced hunters, but when you think
about it, the .410 makes a pretty good
choice for hunting cottontails when
using dogs. Rabbits being chased by
hounds usually stay out ahead of the
dogs at a leisurely pace, so hunters often get close shots at slow moving, or
even sitting, rabbits. Plus, after a hit,
there are not as many pellets in the
meat from an 11/16-ounce load from
a .410 shotshell compared to a 20- or
12-gauge. Using a .410 shotgun on rabbits under 20 yards, I believe, is more
challenging than the larger gauges.
After my first hunt with Steve and
his friends, I decided to get a good .410
shotgun (they had some fun at my expense for being over-gunned with my
20-gauge). Being that I like to collect
vintage guns, and that I always had a
soft spot for the venerable Model 12
Winchester pump gun, I decided to try

and find a Winchester Model 42.
The “baby sister” of the famous
Winchester Model 12, delivery of the
first Model 42 took place in 1933, and
before the year was over the little pump
gun was dominating the .410 events
in skeet. The Model 42 was produced
from 1933 to 1963, and about 164,000
were sold. The Model 42 in outward appearance resembles a miniature Model
12. It’s a slim profile, fast-handling,
quality shotgun weighing about six
pounds, and they are hard to find.
The Model 42 was produced in
several different configurations. A standard grade was offered for the whole
30-year run of the gun, and had a 26- or
28-inch plain or solid rib barrel. It has
a grooved “corncob” style slide handle.
A skeet grade was also offered
from 1933 to 1963, and had a 26- or
28-inch plain, solid or ventilated rib
barrel. It had a checkered extension
slide handle.
A trap grade was built from 1934 to
1939. It had a 26- or 28-inch plain or
solid rib barrel, fancy walnut special
checkered pistol or straight-grip stock
with checkered extension slide handle.
The trap grade checkering pattern has
one closed diamond on each side of the
pistol grip. Or in the case of the straight
grip, the diamond is located on the
underside of the grip. The extension
