quantifies visitor traffic
on the agency’s website.
It helps us determine how
many people are looking
to take a hunter education
class, when they are looking and from where those
visitors are conducting
their search. Web analytics does all that and more.
The second tool we started
using is online surveys to
learn more about what
students thought about our training
programs.
Using web analytics, we began
tracking the traffic on our hunter education class calendar page. We learned
where we currently offer enough classes
to meet the public’s interest in hunter
education opportunities and, more
importantly, where we are not. With
this information, we now have a better
understanding of when and where we
should be scheduling classes throughout the commonwealth. We learned,
too, where we need instructors to teach
more classes.
One of the most noteworthy findings
in our efforts to improve student services to date was recognizing we need
to conduct substantially more classes
during the months of September,
October and November. According to
website analytics, this is when a large
segment of new hunters is looking for
a class. Over the past two years, we’ve
added more than 100 classes statewide
during these months. As a result, annual course enrollments have increased
by several thousand students reaching
nearly 38,000 in 2012.
As part of the online registration
process, students provide an email
address. We now email a survey to
46
graduates after they’ve completed their
class. We ask them to give feedback
about their training experience and we
strive to learn more about their plans
to go hunting. We also want to know
their preferences for when and where
we should offer classes; how far they
are willing to travel to attend a class
and more. We’ll use this information
to refine our class opportunities to
better meet their needs. As a thank
you, we also give them a free, one-year
subscription to the online version of
Pennsylvania Game News! We know
they’ll find the magazine to be both
informative and entertaining as they
start their hunting careers.
Last year, we began to use email
messaging to reach out to our graduates and make them aware of various
hunting-related opportunities we offer.
With more than 80,000 email addresses
of recent hunter education graduates,
we sent emails promoting our junior
pheasant hunting program. Literally
overnight, the events we scheduled began to fill. As a byproduct to this effort,
we used website analytics to identify
where all of the people interested in
this hunting opportunity live and are
now planning to strategically grow
the program in the future by offering
