When Deer Disappear

Y EXPERIENCE, based on 58
years of bowhunting, tells me
several things are guaranteed to happen
every season. The more I pay attention
to detail and the more hours I spend
in the stand, the greater my chances
are of success. My odds of harvesting a
buck are best during the first week and
the last 10 days of the season and are
highest in the last five days.
I am also sure that sometime during
the middle of October, it will seem as if
all the deer disappeared as sightings will
drop dramatically. I call it the dreaded
October lull and every bowhunter has
experienced it. Understanding the lull
increases your chances for success so
let’s take a closer look at what causes
the lull and what action you can take
to increase your deer sightings.
Hunting pressure can impact deer
movement in the first few weeks of
the season. If you are hunting private
land with few hunters and are cautious

about your movements, noise and scent
control you will have little impact on
natural movement. However, if you are
hunting on public land with intense
hunting pressure, or if you are not careful about noise and scent when hunting
private land, deer will quickly sense
danger. Deer that feel pressured have
a tendency to stay in heavier cover in
the evening not appearing in normal
feeding areas until near or just after
dark. They also will head back to cover
before daylight, drastically reducing
your daytime sightings. When this occurs, be sure to scout and select stand
sites closer to bedding areas in heavy
cover. This will increase your chances
for a shot, as deer will linger in these
areas before venturing to open feeding
areas in the late afternoon and also will
feed there later in the morning.
Many hunters make the mistake of
not repositioning their stands to match
changing food conditions. In late sum57
