mer and early fall, deer will be feeding
on abundant ﬁeld crops and are easily
sighted. However, other food sources
come into play as ﬁeld crops are harvested and deer adapt to these changes,
altering their feeding patterns. Acorns
are a favorite of deer and as the mast
crop drops it draws deer away from their
earlier feeding sites. Those big bucks
you used to see along the ﬁeld edges in
early season didn’t disappear, they simply changed food sources. If acorn crops
are heavy but scattered over a wide area
hunting will be difﬁcult, because deer
may not have to travel far to ﬁnd an
abundance of food. They could spend
the entire evening feeding under two
or three large oaks. The best thing you
can do under these conditions is look
for areas that show sign of deer activity
and wait them out. However, if acorns
are sparse, deer may be more mobile
as they search for them. Under these
conditions, consider setting up in the
areas with the heaviest concentration
of acorns. Deer likely will be on the
move and may eventually show up.

Bowhunters who have apple trees in
their area often assume if there are lots
of apples on the ground the deer will
automatically be feeding on them, but
that is not always true. If you ﬁnd lots
of apples on the tree and few apples
on the ground check the area for deer
tracks and droppings, which indicates
they may be feeding in the area. However, if you ﬁnd plenty of apples on the
ground and some of them are rotten it
is a good sign that deer are not using
the area as a major food source at that
time. Make note of the site, but move
on to locate their current feeding areas.
Stay tuned to changing food sources
and be prepared to move your stand
accordingly. During mid-October,
crops are being harvested, mast crops
are dropping and food sources are both
abundant and changing. These changes
will alter the deer movement and if you
don’t change your stand accordingly, it
will seem as if the deer have suddenly
disappeared.
