before breaking out into the lane that
would give me a clear shot. For what
seemed like an eternity, the deer milled
around in the area to my right that kept
them hidden from clear view.
The snap of a breaking branch let
me know that Mickey was approaching,
and also launched the first of the three
deer into my shooting lane. As I settled
my scope's crosshairs on the bolting deer, I spotted antlers. The buck
continued on through, and I focused
my attention on what was hopefully
going to be another chance with the
two remaining deer. Without lowering my gun, I glanced at the thicket
to my right. The approaching pressure
from Mickey's one-man drive sent the
second deer bounding into my shooting
lane without warning. After a quick
check revealed no antlers, I lowered
the crosshairs to the deer's shoulder

and squeezed the trigger. The large
doe dropped immediately in its tracks,
with the entire sequence lasting only
seconds. I stood in amazement as the
third deer, another antlered buck, raced
past my downed deer. Mickey was the
first one to get to my doe, and his announcement that I had killed a buck
sent shivers through me momentarily,
until he pointed to its head to show
that it had shed its antlers.
While dragging the deer out of the
woods with Michael's help, it occurred
to me that the first shot fired from
"Dad's turkey gun" had harvested my
first-ever slug gun deer. The gun that
for slightly more than 12 years had
been another one of Dad's mystery
purchases had finally paid off. We had
said goodbye to Dad on Aug. 4, 2006,
but on Jan. 28, 2012, I could finally say,
"Good buy, Dad!"
