Now that we have covered the basics
of camo let's look at some lesser-know
facts. Most bowhunters have sat motionless in a tree stand along a field
edge perfectly camouflaged when a deer
appeared in the field some distance
away. Suddenly, the deer looks right
at the hunter, goes on alert, blows and
retreats back to cover. If the wind was
right and you were in camo and motionless what could
have happened?
There's a chance
the deer saw you because your camo was
reflecting ultraviolet
light. Deer, unlike
humans, can see in
the dark because of
their ability to see
UV light. (Our eyes
have a built-in filter that prevents us
from seeing UV.)
UV brighteners are
common in clothing because they
brighten the color and have greater
appeal to the shopper. Most laundry
detergents also contain UV brighteners
for "whiter whites and brighter colors."
Unfortunately, those brighteners appear as a blue glow to deer and turkey
in low light conditions, such as morning and evening, which are the most
popular hunting times.
Shining a UV light on your clothing
in a dark room will show if UV brighteners are present. There is a commercial UV killer spray that can be applied
to any camo clothing with brighteners,
which will eliminate the UV glow.
There also is a hunting clothing wash
that contains no brighteners. Once

your clothing is UV free, washing only
in this detergent will eliminate UV as
a problem. Never use normal laundry
detergent to wash your hunting clothes
because every washing will increase the
UV content of the garment and cause
it to appear brighter to deer and turkey.
When washing your hunting camo,
always turn the garment inside out.
This greatly reduces the physical
friction on the garment's surface and
lengthens the effective life of the camo.
To round out
your camo presentation, wear camo
gloves and either
a tight-fitting face
mask or face camo.
Your hands and face
may present a glow
that can be picked
up at a distance and,
because bow hunting is a short-range
affair, your uncovered hands and face
can be a dead giveaway. If you hunt with a face mask,
try a few practice shots with it on to
make sure it does not affect your shot.
A loose face mask can present a different problem. Several years ago I blew
a shot at a nice buck because my face
mask moved as I drew the bow and it
slid over my eyes. I was at full draw with
a trophy in front of me and I couldn't
see a thing. If you wear a face mask,
make sure it is form-fitting or can be
anchored to prevent its shifting during
your draw and anchor.
Camo is critical to hunting, but
even more important is understanding
how it works and what works. Putting
these tips into practice may just tip the
odds in your favor.
