on how much we can accomplish to
achieve a desired habitat outcome,
not trying to harvest more acres for
the sake of achieving a number.
The Game Commission is no different than any other organization.
We have goals and objectives, but
sometimes achieving them is complicated by constraints.
One of our biggest problems right
now is the number of personnel available to do the work. We have leveraged contractors to accomplish more.
We have been spending more than
$500,000 a year in herbicide prep
work for timber harvests to control
ferns, striped maple, beech brush and
invasive species and support highquality diverse forest regeneration
to meet the needs of wildlife. This
fiscal year, which began July 1, we
have already committed more than
$683,000 to a dozen contractors to do
forest habitat regeneration projects.
As of Nov. 1, we also have planned
or bid out more than 3,500 acres of
commercial timber sale projects to
regenerate young forest habitats.
As with many organizations, man-
power is often a limiting factor in how
much work can be accomplished.
The Game Commission is under the
Governor's authority, and as such
our personnel complement is at its
limit. The PGC currently employs
23 full-time field foresters with two
temporary foresters to help out with
the ever-increasing oil, gas and
mineral workload. We do hire a few
intern college students to help out
each summer. Otherwise, we have
a regional forester in each of our six
administrative regions, and a chief
with one secretary to do all the contracts, paperwork, etc. It isn't easy,
but we manage.
Please know that the agency's forestry program is in place for wildlife and
habitat and recreational opportunity
first and foremost. Yes, we could have
a greater impact with more, but we're
making a tremendous difference for
wildlife statewide with the team we
have. So the next time you visit your
local game lands, take a closer look
at what's going on. Our efforts are
intended to eventually reach all of our
forested game lands.

We were very impressed with how well Hunter-Trapper Education class
instructors Robert Dempsey, James Diprimio, Robert Malnofsky Jr.,
Donald Stiffler, William Tonkin, Jeffrey Uschak and Walter Wasnesky
at the Kingston Vets & Sportsmens Club in Latrobe handled their HTE
course last summer. They were very well organized and explained
everything in a manner that everyone could understand. Not one child/
person was left out, and the instructors were willing to work with any
of them one on one. We are proud to say that we now have another
