Following Bears: Like most
wildlife species, black bears are
difficult to count, but knowing
how many bears there are and
in what direction numbers are
headed is a basic requirement
for monitoring populations. The
Game Commission accomplishes
this by capturing and tagging a
sample of bears every year and
then operating check stations
during the hunting season to
determine how many die and
the number of untagged bears for
every tagged bear in the harvest.
A common misconception is that
bears with two ear-tags - one in each ear - are bears that have been trapped
twice. However, each bear we handle is released with two ear-tags, and seeing a
bear with one simply means that the other was lost. Last year, agency employees
tagged 803 bears throughout 55 counties; 78 percent (630) of those bears had
never been tagged before. About 40 percent of them were captured in nuisance
situations. After the hunting season, I spend weeks examining the capture and
check station data to perform basic calculations needed for evaluating the effects
of hunting. For example, of the 803 bears tagged in 2013, 33 were killed before
hunting season - mostly by vehicles - and 139 were harvested. Also, 97 bears
with ear-tags from past years (but not recaptured in 2013) were in the harvest,
as well as eight bears with New Jersey ear-tags. Within specific WMUs, the
proportion removed by hunting varied from 9 to 50 percent. And, the statewide
2013 bear population - also calculated from the same data - was 18,300 bears.
It is no wonder we consider tagging and check stations to be the cornerstones
of our bear monitoring program, and well worth the time and expense it takes

Tracking Endangered Species: Waiting at the edge of a Lancaster County hayfield on a summer morning paid off when I heard dick-dick-dick-cissel. It was the
song of a dickcissel, an obligate grassland specialist and state-endangered breeding bird. The male dickcissel swayed back and forth atop a weedy singing post
conspicuously announcing its territory. Lancaster County is one of 19 counties
that hosted dickcissels in recent breeding seasons and the summer invasions of
2012 and 2013 were well documented thanks to the Pennsylvania birding community. Birders across the state submitted valuable reports of their Dickcissel
observations to Pennsylvania eBird, a real-time, online birding checklist program.
Given the dickcissel's historic unpredictability as a breeder in Pennsylvania and
its ongoing decline on wintering grounds, we'll be keeping a close eye on this
