and .008 of an inch. Any tighter and
the cylinder could bind from bullet
and carbon deposits filling the gap.
Any wider, and some of the expanding
gases are lost through the wider gap
allowing excessive "gap flash" and loss
of potential velocity.
Also, with a cylinder full of empty
cases, the space between the recoil
shield and case head should not exceed
.008 of an inch, or the firing pin may
not have enough forward travel to
deliver enough punch to reliably set
off the primers.
With a single-action, the center
pin (that holds the cylinder in place)
should not work its way out when the
gun is fired, but should be able to be
withdrawn only when pushing in the
center pin plunger (on the frame). The
cylinder should be removed easily and
put back in place. Also, the ejector rod
(on the side of the barrel) should work
freely when pushed to eject cases, and
return back into place when released.
With a double-action, when pushing (or pulling on some models) the
cylinder release, the cylinder should
not just flop out loose. It should require
a slight nudge to open, and when returning it into the frame, there should
be a definite snap when it locks in
place. Also with the cylinder open,
if you spin the center pin or cylinder
there should be no wobbling of either
component. If there is, that means the
center pin is bent and needs replacing. Last thing, the center pin on a
double-action also acts as an extractor/
ejector, so when pushing it down to
extract cases it should easily go down
and snap back - from returning spring
pressure - into place when released.
Other simple things to look at are
the condition of the chambers, which
should be clean without splits, cracks
or rust; and the barrel, which should
have clean and crisp rifling without
major deposits, chips or rust. Sometimes excessive handloads can split or
crack the rear of the barrel. Also, the
condition of firing pins should have
clean, round, smooth surfaces without
pitting to ensure ignition and prevent
pierced primers.
