of it before. Maybe the deer wasn't hurt
as badly as I thought.
I replayed that buck getting up and
running in my head all night. I wondered about the distress blow. Thankfully it was cold, a low 20s night. And
the snow tapered off shortly after dark. I
was heading back up the mountainside
at 5:30 a.m.
I reached that dried-up creek bed
at daylight, but as hard as I worked, I
couldn't pick up anything more than
tracks heading east. The tracks, I
concluded, assured me I was heading
in the right direction. But after about
100 yards, I decided to search just for
the deer. Another 200 yards of searching turned up nothing. Then I had
one of those "what if" moments. I then

thought, What if there was another
buck and it looked like mine?
I went back to the site where the
fleeing deer intersected the creek bed.
There was no blood. But as I started
walking slowly west, I found a drop
of blood after about 10 yards. I found
another five steps later. Twenty steps
later, while focusing intently on the
creek bed for more sign, I looked to
the right and there lay my buck in the
mountain laurel. He wasn't moving.
The search was over.
My trophy was a solid eight, to this
day the biggest buck I've ever taken
with a bow. His rack still hangs in
my living room, alone. I revisit his
memory often because it fuels that
inner strength we all need sometimes
to challenge the elements, to stay in a
tree stand longer. It's also lasting proof
of how rewarding bowhunting can be.
So what was up with the buck that
blew and I saw run up the creek bed
before leaving the blood trail for the
night? Turns out the buck I shot had a
twin. I saw it four days later and
watched him for about 10 minutes in
pursuit of a doe. The resemblance was
uncanny. Same grayish muzzle, distinct
white bands around its nose and eyes.
It even moved through the woods with
the confidence of my buck. What a
sight. What a season.
