men in the eyes. "Mr. Stringer, as I recall, didn't your 10-year-old grandson
kill that 7-point buck last year using a
crossbow while you mentored him?"
"Yup. Sure did," Stringer said proudly, "but he only used a crossbow because
he's still little and not strong enough
to draw and hold back a longbow or
recurve."
"And Mr. Camsareon," Boltin continued, "Didn't your old man bag that
big buck on opening day this year with
his crossbow?"
"Well, ah, yes," replied Camseron
defensively. "But Dad's
got that bad arthritic
shoulder and can't
really pull back
his old compound
anymore."
"So crossbows
are fine for weak
l i ttle childr en
and arthritic old
people," Boltin
observed, "especially
if they happen to be
members of your immediate
family, but not for anyone else."
"Works for me," agreed Stringer.
"Tell you what, fellas," said Boltin,
"I'm not going to argue that, in some
ways, a crossbow doesn't give me some
advantage over a compound, and a
major advantage over a longbow or
recurve. But before you get too bent
out of shape, let's put some things into
perspective."
"Already got perspective," sneered
Stringer.
"I admire your persistence and dedication in sticking with your longbow,"
Boltin confessed, "but you're lucky
to have sufficient time to dedicate to

practice so that you can be extremely
proficient with your equipment. In our
modern world, most of us don't have
enough time to devote to practice, not
with work or studies or family obligations. And despite your dedication and
devotion, given the primitive nature of
your equipment, I'll bet you miss more
deer than you kill, and bad hits on game
also can be a problem."
Stringer shrugged. "Maybe."
"And keep in mind that the crossbow is itself a primitive weapon,
dating back to the European dark
ages - used by William the Conqueror
around 1066 - and probably even goes back
to the third century B.C. in China.
That could mean
that folks were
slinging arrows
from crossbows
long before Native
Americans were
shooting at bison
with their longbows. No way of
knowing for sure. And,
of course, crossbows predate compound
bows, which didn't make the archery
scene until sometime in the 1960s."
Camsareon sank lower into his seat as
Boltin continued. "So if you want to
talk about which bow is really the most
primitive, crossbows win hands down."
"Now hold on there," interrupted
Camsareon. "You can't tell me that the
medieval Europeans and the ancient
Chinese had all the advantages you
have, such as carbon arrows, scopes
and safeties. Heck, your crossbow even
has cables and cams like my compound
and uses some of the same modern
technology."
