A year ago while visiting, Uncle Bud
showed Rick his guns, and Rick expressed his desire to buy them when he
was ready to let them go. A few weeks
prior to Uncle Bud's passing, Rick also
expressed his desire once again to his
aunt who told him that he could have
them when the end finally came. Needless to say, he was quite shocked during
his recent visit, when his aunt told him,
"We got rid of all his stuff two weeks
after his funeral." The family handyman had gotten the guns.
Bud's two children had moved away
years ago in pursuit of their careers, and
neither had ever hunted. So when they
came home to help settle the estate, all
of Uncle Bud's personal stuff was either
given away to friends or donated to
local charities.
Stories like Uncle Bud's are not as
unique as you might think. Most old
hunters I know never parted with
their guns until the very end was
near. If there isn't a will, promised
guns may end up somewhere else.
Sometimes a family doesn't understand a gun's value to nephews or
other relatives, or its resale value.
That's why families should discuss
these situations before it's too late.
Guns make terrific family heirlooms. I am constantly reminded of
that every time I shuck that vintage
16-gauge Ithaca Model 37 that belonged to my beloved Uncle Phil.
How I yearned for one like that when
I was a boy trudging through the
briars of Tioga County. After a long
illness, he sold it and the others in
his small collection to me a few days
before he entered the nursing home
at the ripe old age of 83. He knew
he wouldn't be coming home and
was about to leave for an even better

hunting ground than Tioga County.
In most families where sons and
daughters are hunters it's pretty cut
and dried. The family guns are normally passed down to the siblings,
and hopefully this has been decided
far enough ahead of time so each
knows which firearm will go to which
son or daughter. In other families,
where there are no sons or daughters
who hunt, there may be nephews or
cousins who hunt or collect guns,
such as the situation with my friend
Rick.
If you are one of those extended
family members, with an Uncle Bud
that has a few nice, old guns, don't
be afraid to have that conversation
