it was a legal one.
Fifteen minutes later Gus came out
near the same spot where they had
seen the deer. He followed the tracks
past the watchers to see which way it
had headed, then came back and told
them the story of the legal buck he had
just missed. It was 1:30 and the snow
continued to fall as we headed to Julius'
house for lunch.
When we got to
the house, we found
out Jim's vehicle
was stuck near the
tree stand in the
new snow. Gus' wife
called to tell him
he got called to go
to work, to help fix
power outages. We
ate a little longer
than usual and talked
a little more than we
should have, but I
think the feeling that
the season was over
was in the back of everyone's minds.
Finally we cleared the table and
headed outside. Dave said he was going
to take his truck to the tree stand to
pull out Jim, and then he was calling
it a season. Dad asked me what I was
going to do.
"I know the general vicinity where
there is a legal buck," I answered. "So
I'm going to spend the rest of the day
in that area."
"That's exactly what I was thinking," he replied. We got in my truck
and headed to where we ended the last
drive. I told dad that I was going to try
and follow the buck's tracks.
"OK," he said. "I'll go above the area
we drove and try and find a spot where
I can see around. If you push him, he
might come my way."
It was 3 o'clock when we parked
the truck. The snow had stopped and
the wind was calm. We had 6 inches
of additional snow. As we followed our
earlier footprints, they were mostly
covered. When we crossed the tracks
the buck had made, I would probably
have missed them if it wasn't for Gus'
footprints as he followed him earlier.
We split up and I
started following the
tracks, which were
partially filled depressions.
He was headed
south from the time
we had jumped him,
but was now slowly
turning to the east. I
was moving at a fast
rate, because I knew
the tracks were hours
old, and I wasn't
making a sound. The
conditions were ideal
for tracking.
As I headed east, I came to a deer
trail running southeast. There were
several sets of tracks on the trail.
The track I was following didn't cross
the trail, so I assumed it followed in
a southeast direction. I followed for
about 75 yards when one track broke
away and headed east. With no way
of knowing which way the buck was
heading or which track was his, I figured my only hope was to follow the
single track.
After about 150 yards, it turned to
the north, which was in the general
direction of dad. As I was thinking
this might increase our chances, I came
upon a group of tracks in an area where
it was hard to discern one from another.
"He was
headed south
from the
time we had
jumped him,
but was now
slowly turning
to the east."
